Fierce Self-Compassion – A conversation between Tara Brach and Kristin Neff

Kristin Neff is a pioneer in self-compassion research and a leader in bringing practices of self-compassion alive in our world. This conversation is on her latest book, Fierce Self-Compassion, which helps women awaken both receptive and active dimensions of compassion – tenderness and fierceness.

For more information and practices on Fierce Self-Compassion visit Kristin’s website link here!

“When fierce and tender compassion runs through our veins and flows inward as well as outward, we help both society and ourselves. Stumbling and falling down not only becomes an opportunity to learn and grow; it allows us to relate to others who also struggle, strengthening interconnection.”

These two talks look at the challenges to awakening through our bodies, and the practices and teachings that guide us on the path.

Experience the substance of the body and the world as made up of vibrating particles.
And these particles made up of even finer energy particles.
Drifting more deeply, feel into each particle as it condenses from infinity and dissolves back into it continuously.
Noticing this, breathe easily, with infinity dancing everywhere.

Entering the Mystery

John O’Donahue writes, “We are so busy managing our lives, we forget this great mystery we are involved in.” This talk looks at the ways we pull away from the mystery and the path of “beginners mind” that enables us to encounter this living world with freshness, courage and wonder (a special talk from the 2013 archives).

Bridging the Divide: Learning to Tend and Befriend

One of the great sufferings facing us is the growing divide between humans with different views, different realities. This talk looks at several levels of divides—being at war with ourselves, creating separation in our personal relationships, and societal divides. We then reflect on how we can evolve consciousness from the trance of “Fight, Flight, Freeze” to the wholeness that arises with “Tend and Befriend.”

Meditation: Being Here for Life (18:04 min.)

It’s easy to race through our seasons and miss the mystery and preciousness of unfolding moments. This meditation invites us into an embodied, openhearted presence and includes a poem by Pat Schneider called “Instructions for the Journey.”

The self you leave behind
is only a skin you have outgrown.
Don’t grieve for it.
Look to the wet, raw, unfinished
self, the one you are becoming.
The world, too, sheds its skin:
politicians, cataclysms, ordinary days.
It’s easy to lose this tenderly
unfolding moment. Look for it
as if it were the first green blade
after a long winter. Listen for it
as if it were the first clear tone
in a place where dawn is heralded by bells.

And if all that fails,
wash your own dishes.
Rinse them.
Stand in your kitchen at your sink.
Let cold water run between your fingers.
Feel it.

Three Dimensions of Conscious Prayer

Prayer can be a creative, vibrant and infinitely tender part of our spiritual awakening. This talk explores the dimensions of embodied presence, sincere expression and silence that bring transformational power to our prayers.

God speaks in the silence of the heart, listening is the beginning and ending of a prayer.
